Kathrin Pechlof

The concert performer, improviser and composer Kathrin Pechlof is one of a very small number of harpists who integrate the sound of the harp into contemporary jazz.

She chooses her own path, steering clear of the cliché of the harp-playing angel and disregarding conventional stylistic categories. Kathrin Pechlof studied classical harp in Munich and jazz composition and improvisation in Cologne. Her compositions “oscillate with rare conviction between the seemingly cold, abstract world of neotonality and the improvisatory spheres of jazz” (Jazz Podium).

Her vision of a synthesis between improvised and composed music attracted international attention after the release in autumn 2013 of IMAGINARIUM, the debut CD of her trio with Robert Landfermann and Christian Weidner, on the Munich PIROUET label. The trio’s concerts have been recorded by the broadcasting stations WDR, BR, rbb and Radio Bremen. In 2014, they performed at Jazz Ahead’s German Jazz Expo and also gave concerts in churches and jazz clubs and at jazz festivals and cultural associations. They also performed at the Berlin Philharmonic and for the Goethe Institutes in Athens and Nicosia.

Kathrin Pechlof has collaborated on radio and CD productions with many famous musicians from Germany’s jazz scene. Apart from her trio partners Robert Landfermann and Christian Weidner (IMAGINARIUM, Pirouet), these include Pablo Held (GLOW, Pirouet), Niels Klein (LOOM, Deutschlandfunk), Benjamin Schäfer (QUIET FIRE, Deutschlandfunk), Meinrad Kneer, Frank Gratkowski, Almut Kühne and Uli Plessmann (Phosphoros Ensemble, Unit Records). She has performed with Jonas Burgwinkel, Sebastian Gille, Tobias Christl, Lucia Cadotsch, Uwe Steinmetz, Wanja Slavin, Johannes Lauer, Matthias Schriefl, Hindol Deb and many others.
She frequently appears as guest artist in crossover projects like the electronic music trio Brandt Bauer Frick (Pitch Festival Amsterdam, Mutek Festival Mexico City, Atonal Festival Berlin, Beethoven Fest Bonn, etc.) and has played with pop acts like Max Herre (MTV Unplugged) and Emiliana Torrini (XJazz Festival).

She has also performed as a substitute musician for various orchestras including the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Ludwigsburg Festival, the South-West German Philharmonic Orchestra in Constance, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and the Beethoven Ensemble Bonn. She has been a member of the Taschenphilharmonie chamber orchestra in Munich for many years.

She was nominated for the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis with the jazz quartet “Cosmic Groove Orchestra” in 2010 and for the ECHO Klassik with the Taschenphilharmonie chamber orchestra in 2011. Her work has been documented in numerous radio, TV, and CD productions (Pirouet , BR, rbb, Deutschlandfunk, ZDF, perfect toy records, SONY, Himpsl records).

Together with Christian Weidner and Uli Kempendorff, she is co-curator and organiser of the SERIOUS SERIES of contemporary jazz concerts in Wedding in Berlin. Kathrin Pechlof lives in Berlin.
